Windowsill gardening is a favorite among urban farmers! Since urban areas are often compromised for space, expanding your organic garden to the indoors is a fantastic option. If you don’t have a windowsill, you can set up some great little indoor organic gardens with grow lights! But let’s get back to the windowsill for now.

Windowsill gardening

What Can I Plant Indoors?

Herbs like rosemary, cilantro, chives, basil, tarragon, parsley, oregano etc, are all excellent for a windowsill and do well over winters. If you have a larger windowsill, you can advance to some smaller vegetables and lettuces using the square foot gardening method! Lettuce, onions, radish, carrot, cherry tomatoes, peppers, beets, spinach etc.

It’s best to stay away from pumpkins, squash, beans, peas etc., unless you want your kitchen looking like a jungle!  They probably wont work well anyway.

  • Can I Grow Indoors All Year Round?

It can be done, but it is best to stick to the natural growing seasons for best results!

What Else Do I Need?

You will need sunlight, preferably from a southern facing window. Good air circulation is a bonus! A nice big bay window is awesome, but the kitchen is so great for herbs! What’s better than clipping a few of your favorite herbs fresh into your meals right from your window!?

Lettuce, kale, chard and other salad greens may require less sunlight if you are lacking in that department! And if your plants are too cold, you can also purchase plant heating pads!

You will need to water your windowsill garden plants just like you would outside, but you will need to give them extra nutrients since they are in small containers. Compost tea or other fertilizers like liquid seaweed in small amounts twice a month, will work and help keep your plants free of disease. Rinsing your plants will help remove any bugs that may accumulate!

What is The Easiest Way to Enjoy a Windowsill Garden?

Well I’m glad you asked! If you have the time to create your own windowsill wonderland, great, but if not, I just received my “Garden in a Can” in the mail.  Seriously this is the coolest thing for the everyday person who doesn’t have time to mess with dirt, containers, fertilizer etc. Just order, crack the can, dump the seeds in, water, and place it in your windowsill! You will be reaping the benefits of fresh herbs in no time!

My kids adored these little parcels. And it was easy for them to plant and exciting to see what popped out of the soil!

These absolutely make the perfect gift, especially for busy people who don’t have the time or energy to put into a garden. The instructions are 3 easy steps and listed right on the label! What’s best, is they are only 12 bucks for 2 cans! What a cool way to get someone hooked on producing their own organic food!

So we have tried these little cans out, and we are super impressed. They give you enough seeds that you have to thin out all the plants you grow! This means you can eat the little plants, throw them out, or plant them in another container which is what I did! The seeds grew fast and it was so easy, I decided to grow a whole windowsill full of food this winter!

I can’t wait to order one of the “Back to the Roots” water gardens that bring aquaponics into small spaces!

You can order your own garden in a can and find out more about Back to the Roots products here.
